Rupert Murdoch opened a Twitter account over the weekend, and while the octogenarian mogul is no @justinbieber (who has 16 million followers) his tweets @rupertmurdoch did draw lots of media attention over the weekend (and, in three days, nearly 90,000 followers).

Murdoch used his new forum to apparently endorse Rick Santorum.

On Sunday, Murdoch tweeted: “Good to see santorum surging in Iowa. Regardless of policies, all debates showed principles, consistency and humility like no other.” Then last night: “Can’t resist this tweet, but all Iowans think about Rick Santorum. Only candidate with genuine big vision for country.”

Which led @emilybell, digital director at Columbia J School, to tweet:

If @rupertmurdoch can endorse Rick Santorum with 140 characters on a free platform, not sure why he needs expensive newspapers anymore.

To which @jeffjarvis added, “The entire reason @rupertmurdoch owns, e.g., a NY Post, is to have a “bully pulpit.” He’s just learned Twitter is our bully pulpit. Jealous”

Murdoch apparently opened his Twitter account after attending a New Year’s eve party with Twitter co-founder and executive chairman Jack Dorsey, raising speculation that NewsCorp might be eyeing a stake in Twitter. Last month, NewsCorp’s second largest shareholder — Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal — bought a $300-million slice of Twitter.

All of this is especially bizarre because of Murdoch’s slow embrace of social media (despite a perceptive speech in 2005 about the future of media) and his inept embrace of SM through the $580-million acquisition of MySpace which ended in its disposition for just $35-million. His launch of the iPad-only The Daily last year was thought to signal renewed enthusiasm for new media — except that The Daily hasn’t caught fire, and Murdoch has been locking many of his print titles behind paywalls that cut them off from social embrace.

What inquiring minds want to know is whether Murdoch’s newfound interest in Twitter signals a new awakening.
