Goodbye Kim Jong Il, hello ’30 Rock’

As we await the mid-year return of Tina Fey‘s “30 Rock,” the 5-minute new-season teaser posted below poses an interesting question:

How will the show deal with the death of Kim Jong Il?

In last season’s finale, Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) learned that Kim Jong Il had kidnapped his wife, Avery (Elizabeth Banks), while she was on assignment in North Korea. She then married the dictator’s son.

“30 Rock” producer Robert Carlock told USWeekly that the show would incorporate KJI’s Dec. 18 death into its storyline. “Jack’s love life is pretty complicated and it just got more complicated because I think, technically, Avery is the First Lady of North Korea.” Carlock adds:

We sort of went back to the script because we’d already shot eight or nine episodes and we realized that luckily we hadn’t referred to King Jong Il by name yet — just to North Korea in general. We can’t go back and address the changes there, but the fun puzzle is turning around and trying to figure out how to get her out of there and how to continue things.”

“30 Rock” resumes on Thursday, Jan. 12 (8pm ET), on NBC.

Meanwhile, if you’ve never seen “Team America: World Police” by “South Park” and “Book of Mormon” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, this is definitely the moment.

And speaking of comedy … in case you missed this: The UN lowered its flags to half-mast following Kim Jong Il’s death.
